About Sailing Dictionary

Sailing Dictionary's mission is to compile nautical terminology for practical use at sea. The ambition is not to create a linguistically correct dictionary but to help sailors communicate about their passion in different languages.

This project is a living effort (see the stats on this page). Help it grow in whatever way you can. Spread the word, suggest words to be added that are currently missing or point out mistakes.

3 languages

Sailing Dictionary currently supports English, Schwedish and German.

64 Concepts

A concept represents a "thing". For example: boat, line, motor. Different languages use different words for these concepts. For each language there are one or more translations that describe a concept.

198 Translations

A translation is a word, used in a certain language, that describes a concept. In English, it is called “boat“, in Swedish, it is called “båt" and in German it is called “Boot“.

All three translations describe the same concept but with different words.
